Mothers of the Bible Devotions

Monday, May 13, 2024 – Read Genesis 3:20 - Eve was not only the first woman, but also the first mother. Her name in Hebrew means “life” or “living.” And she would give birth to Cain, Abel, Seth, and other children not named in the Bible. Eve is most known, however, for disobeying God by eating the forbidden fruit. She and Adam were both guilty of sinning against God, ultimately ushering sin and death into the world through their actions.  Today, Eve reminds us that our actions as parents have consequences not only for us, but for our children. May our love for and obedience to God impact our children positively for generations to come.

Tuesday, May 14, 2024 – Read Genesis 18:10-14 - When God first called Abraham to follow Him, He promised Abraham that he would become the father of many nations. This meant Sarah would then become the mother of many nations. Though Abraham believed God, Sarah was doubtful, and rightfully so. Along with their advancing age Sarah was unable to have children. So, she laughed at the prospect of having a son. But God responded by asking, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Sarah would indeed give birth to a son. She even named him, Isaac, which in Hebrew means “laughter.” Her story reminds us that there is nothing too hard for God.

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 – Read Luke 1:26-38 - Elizabeth and Mary are mothers in the Bible with powerful stories that demonstrate how God’s plan and purpose for our lives will come to pass in His timing. They both embraced their purposes as mothers with great humility, awe, and wonder. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth who was elderly and barren gave birth to John the Baptist, and Mary, though she was a virgin, gave birth to Jesus. Like Elizabeth and Mary, may we have faith that God has a special plan for our lives, and may we rejoice in our Lord as we wait in eager expectation for Him to do great things in and through the lives of our children!

Thursday, May 16, 2024 – Read 2 Timothy 1:3-5: - Never underestimate the influence of godly parents and grandparents. The impact of their faith is passed down from generation to generation. Paul saw this firsthand in the life of Timothy. His mother Eunice and grandmother Lois taught him to trust God from an early age. They read Scripture to him and encouraged him to put His faith in Jesus Christ. As a result of their influence, Timothy became a leader in the early church. What impact is your faith having upon your children and/or grandchildren today?

Friday, May 17, 2024 – Read Acts 16:13-15 - Lydia was a prominent businesswoman and a woman of faith and influence in her community. When the apostle Paul and his companions traveled to Philippi, they went outside the city gate and found Lydia worshiping God with other women in her community. Lydia received Paul’s message with enthusiasm and accepted Jesus into her heart and life. As a result, her whole household was baptized and the church in Philippi was started. May Lydia’s faith and enthusiasm for God’s kingdom be ours today as we use our influence to impact our children and our community for Christ.
